Father's inspiration

We just celebrated Father's Day this past month, and for yours truly, this is the third Father's day since my own Dad passed. We were never that close and I suspect that is one of the reasons I overdo it as a Dad, myself. That said, I do find that I now reflect more on how my own Father inspired me and made me who I am. We tend to overlook the meaningful contributions, while pining for some idealistic picture of what the 'perfect' Dad should be. Sometimes we tend to miss how our own children shape and inspire us.

In most, if not all, of our podcasts so far, I like to inquire about life as a child and who the greatest influencers were for our guests. It's easy to think about the lessons, guidance, and inspiration that fathers provide to their children. Yet in many ways, the relationship can be reciprocal. Children inspire fathers to push harder, dream bigger, and uncover strengths they never knew they had.

Over the past three episodes of the Inspiration Podcast, our guests shared stories that highlighted how family can shape our purpose, influence our decisions, and inspire us to make a difference.

In our May 25 conversation, Bill Fox of FoxNet Solutions (www.foxnetsolutions.com) reflected on his entrepreneurial journey and the motivation behind building his business. Like many parents, Bill wanted more than financial success—he wanted the flexibility to be present for his children as they grew up. The company he built created opportunities not only for himself but eventually for his family as well. His story reminds us that many businesses begin not with a desire for profit, but with a desire to create a better life for the people we love most.

On June 7, Ian Cook of Cook Homes (www.cookhomes.ca) and Rupert Street Recording (www.rupertstreetrecording.com) shared how the influence of his father and father-in-law helped shape both his career and his approach to business. Their values, work ethic, and commitment to family became guiding principles throughout his life. Ian's story demonstrated that inspiration often travels across generations, with fathers passing along lessons that continue to influence decisions long after childhood. It was a powerful reminder that family values can become the foundation upon which successful businesses and meaningful lives are built.

Our June 20 conversation with Rob Brady of Bradys Meats and Deli (www.bradysmeats.com) explored a much more difficult chapter of fatherhood. After the devastating loss of his son to suicide, Rob faced unimaginable grief and heartbreak. Yet from that pain emerged a new purpose. Inspired by his son's memory and driven by a desire to help others, Rob helped create KW Men Who Walk and Talk (wwwkwmenwhowalkandtalk.com), a men's mental health support group that is positively impacting countless lives. His story demonstrates that even in our darkest moments, the love we have for our children can inspire us to create something meaningful that serves others.

These three conversations reveal different dimensions of fatherhood, but they share a common thread. Whether inspiring us to build a business, guiding us through life's important decisions, or motivating us to help others through tragedy, our children often become some of our greatest sources of inspiration. They challenge us to become better people, better leaders, and better members of our communities.

As Father's Day passes and summer begins, perhaps the greatest gift we can acknowledge is not only what fathers give to their children, but also what children give to their fathers: purpose, perspective, motivation, and inspiration.
